Tampa Police Release Bodycam Video of Shooting With Suspect in 2023

TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it has closed an investigation after more than a dozen officers fired their weapons in a shootout with a suspect last year.

This week, Tampa Police released bodycam footage of the officer-involved shooting on July 17, 2023.

Police Chief Lee Bercaw said the shooter, identified as 33-year-old Michael A. Bresnahan, was wanted after he stabbed the mother of his young children.

Bercaw said the stabbing took place in front of her children in the 2800 block of 35th Street. The woman survived her injuries.

Officials said Bresnahan drove away with the children and dropped them off at his brother's house.

In the house, he allegedly stole an AK-47 rifle that belonged to his brother.

Officers spotted Bresnahan near Dale Mabry Highway and Spruce Street and began pursuing him. Eight minutes later, he pointed the gun at officers.

He led the police on a chase.

Police helicopter video shows officers attempting to end the pursuit with spike barriers, but the suspect drove around them in a black SUV.

Body camera footage captured the scene after the suspect crashed into a blue Mazda at the corner of North Florida Avenue and East Gladys Street.

Two occupants of the Mazda were able to escape and were uninjured.

According to Bercaw, Bresnahan opened fire from his SUV immediately after the accident. Eighteen officers returned fire. Bresnahan died at the scene.

“Let me be clear: this suspect was a danger to the public and a deadly threat to our community,” Bercaw said. “No one should have to witness the chaos this suspect caused in our community.”

Although video footage shows several bystanders in the vicinity of the shooting, police say none of them were injured. No police officers were injured either.

The officers involved in the shooting were assigned administrative duties following the shooting.

Tampa police said all officers were acquitted and the shooting was justified.

FDLE said the investigation was complete.
