Sports viewership on Thursday (6.6.): NBA finals, WCWS, French Open and more

The NBA Finals got off to a weak start in the ratings, but still topped the other television shows as usual on Thursday, June 6.

Thursday's first NBA Finals game between the Mavericks and Celtics averaged a 5.7 rating and 10.99 million viewers on ABC, making it the lowest-rated and least-watched Finals opening game – excluding the COVID-delayed years of 2020 and 2021 – since 2007. Ratings and viewership were down 5% from the Heat's first game against the Nuggets last year.

As is to be expected for an event the size of the NBA Finals, the Celtics' stunning victory was still the top television program of the day. For more information on NBA Finals ratings, see the article below.

Outside of the NBA, Game 2 of the Women's College World Series Final (Oklahoma-Texas) was the day's biggest draw, drawing 2.04 million viewers — the largest WCWS audience in three years and the second largest in nine years. The two-game WCWS Final averaged 1.98 million viewers, the highest average ever recorded for the best-of-three title series. The Golf Channel ranked third in sports. Coverage of the opening round of the PGA Tour Memorial tournament averaged 448,000 viewers, up from 409,000 last year. In the semifinals of the women's French Open Iga Swiatek's win Coco Gauff reached an average of 411,000 on Tennis Channel, followed by Jasmine Paolini above Mirra Andreeva with 330,000 viewers on the Tennis Channel. Figures for NBC's coverage of the semifinals were not immediately available.

Further down the scale, ESPN2 averaged 257,000 viewers on the second day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships, up from 227,000 last year. A prime-time regional slot of Major League Baseball drew 209,000 viewers on MLB Network.
