Seven Nebraska football players no longer in the squad

One of Nebraska’s most promising young defensive backs is no longer with the Husker football team.

Sophomore cornerback Ethan Nation and several walk-ons are no longer on the Nebraska football team's roster; this update comes during NU's summer training program.

Other players who completed spring camp but left in the summer include running back Cole Ballard, punter Jacob Hohl, defensive back Javon Kinchen, running back Trevon Kinchen, kicker Spencer Pankratz and fullback Landon Ternus.

Nation, who signed a scholarship with Nebraska in 2023, appeared in two games on defense last season and was the team's punt returner in the final stretch. Special teams coordinator Ed Foley again named Nation as one of his top returners this spring, and the cornerback had a strong performance in the spring game as well, which included an interception.

Nation would have been one of several young defensive backs fighting for playing time this season but instead he will move on. Nation can enter the transfer portal if he wishes when it reopens in the fall.

The departures of two walk-on specialists, Hohl and Pankratz, are mitigated by the presence of new kicker Nico Ottomanelli and punter Kamdyn Koch. Javon and Trevon Kinchen joined the NU roster during the 2023 season and did not appear in a game, while Ballard and Ternus redshirted during their only season with the program.
