New “Hunger Games” film based on the book “Sunrise on the Reaping”

Lionsgate has plans for a new Hunger Games Movie, The Hunger Games – Sunrise over the Harvestbased on the just announced new novel by franchise author Suzanne Collins.

The film adaptation, which was unveiled Thursday by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson, has Francis Lawrence in talks to direct the adaptation under Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson's Color Force banner. Lawrence, screenwriter Michael Arndt and producer Jacobson have previously worked with Lionsgate on four film adaptations of previous Collins books – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire And mockingjay – which grossed $3.3 billion at the box office.

Collins and her publisher Scholastic announced the fifth book in the series on Thursday. Scholastic will Sunrise on harvest day simultaneously in print, digital, and audio formats in North America and other English-speaking territories on March 18, 2025.

There is no information yet on the film's cast, but Lionsgate has set a theatrical release date for November 20, 2026. The Hunger Games: Sunrise over the harvest.

In the Hunger Games Universe, Sunrise on harvest day returns to the world of Panem, 24 years before the events of The hunger Gamesand timed to coincide with the harvest of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

“The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and has had a profound impact on the history of the games, even to the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter century later. Like fans around the world, we eagerly await this exciting return to Panem,” Lionsgate's Fogelson said in a statement as he introduced the next chapter in the film series.

The 50th Hunger Games are notable because the winner was Haymitch Abernathy, the only winner from District 12 before the one-two victory of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark 24 years later. Haymitch, who like all winners later became a mentor to tributes from his district, was portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the Hunger Games adjustments.

The Hunger Games – Sunrise over the Harvest Film follows The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes Prequel film and marks the sixth Hunger Games film from Color Force since the franchise was brought to Lionsgate.

Lionsgate debuted the first of four blockbuster films based on the Hunger Games Novels in which Jennifer Lawrence played the main role as Katniss Everdeen. In the studio adaptation of Collins' original book, Katniss and her colleague Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) were sent from District 12 to the Capitol to fight for survival.

The Hunger Games The franchise, which depicts a dystopian future of America, also starred Liam Hemsworth, Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks. Lawrence has directed four previous films in the Hunger Games Franchise and every film since catch fire.

The blockbuster from Lionsgate Hunger Games Franchise has also helped make post-apocalyptic youth literature a sought-after subject in Hollywood and paved the way for other film series such as The Labyrinth Runner And Deviating. Lionsgate has also already introduced theme park attractions, experiences and live events around the franchise, including “The World of the Hunger Games” at Motiongate Dubai theme park and a major stage production set to premiere in London.

“Lionsgate has been a wonderful home and partner for the Hunger Games franchise and I am thrilled to be working with Adam and the team as we bring this next story to theaters in 2026,” Collins said in her own statement.

Meredith Wieck and Scott O'Brien will oversee production for Lionsgate. Patricia Laucella and Phil Strina oversaw book rights for Lionsgate. Collins was represented by Jason Dravis of The Dravis Agency and Diane Golden and Sarah Lerner of the law firm Katz Golden Lerner LLP.
