Conference record: Four Sun Belt programs reach NCAA baseball regional finals

NEW ORLEANS – For the first time in Sun Belt Conference history, four representatives – Coastal Carolina, James Madison, Louisiana and Southern Miss – reached their respective NCAA baseball regional finals before falling to the regional hosts.

The Sun Belt was the only conference with three or more attempts to send each of its representatives to the regional finals and was one of four conferences with four or more regional finalists, along with the SEC (7), ACC (6) and Big 12 (5).

Coastal Carolina opened its regional championship with a 13-3 win over Vanderbilt on Friday, May 31 before falling to regional host and national No. 6 seed Clemson 4-3 on Saturday, June 1. The Chanticleers secured their third consecutive berth in the regional final with a 6-5 win over High Point on Sunday, June 2, but were unable to defeat Clemson 12-5, forcing a do-or-die matchup on Monday.

Coastal Carolina finished the season 36-25, reaching its 20th all-time NCAA Baseball Regional Championship appearance.

James Madison fell to South Carolina 8-7 in its regional opener on Friday, May 31, but fought back through the losers bracket with wins over Bryant (8-1) and the Gamecocks (2-0) to reach the regional final in its first postseason appearance since 2011. The Dukes failed to force a do-or-die game, falling 5-3 to regional host NC State on Sunday, June 2.

James Madison finished the 2024 season 36-25, ranking ninth all-time in the NCAA Baseball Regional.

Sun Belt regular-season champion Louisiana fell to Texas 12-5 in its regional opener on Friday, May 31, but edged Grambling (12-5) and the Longhorns (10-2) in the losers' bracket to advance to the regional final. The Ragin' Cajuns could not force a do-or-die game, losing to regional host and national third-seed Texas A&M (9-4) on Sunday, June 2.

Louisiana finished the season 42-20, after its third consecutive and 19th all-time appearance in the NCAA Baseball Regional.

Sun Belt tournament champion Southern Miss lost 10-4 to Indiana in its regional opener on Friday, May 31, but defeated Northern Kentucky 6-0 and the Hoosiers 15-3 to advance to the regional final for the fifth consecutive year. The Golden Eagles failed to force a do-or-die game, losing 12-3 to regional host and national top seed Tennessee on Sunday, June 2.

Southern Miss finished the 2024 season 43-20 – its eighth consecutive 40-win season, leading NCAA Division I – following its eighth consecutive season and 20th all-time appearance in the NCAA Baseball Regional.


For the third consecutive year and the sixth time since 2000, four Sun Belt baseball programs represented the conference at the NCAA Baseball Regionals. The Sun Belt was one of four conferences with four or more teams in the NCAA field, along with the SEC, ACC and Big 12, and has been a multi-bid conference in 29 of 35 seasons since 1989.
