The “Summer Music in the Parks” series will begin soon in Algonac, Clay Township, Harsens Island and Ira Township.

“Each year our Music in the Parks series expands along the St. Clair County Downstream Coast,” said Cindy Babisz, Clay Township Recreation Coordinator and Ira Township Recreation Director. “These great family-friendly events in Algonac, Clay Township, Harsens Island and Ira Township are all funded by sponsors and generously supported by local businesses and organizations.”

Each series is free to the public.

The 2024 Algonac Clay Music in the Parks series begins June 6. The series will take place on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the first half of the series taking place at Algonac Riverfront Park and the second half at Clay Township Park.

“ML Chartier has been the title sponsor of the Algonac Clay Music in the Park series since 2017,” said Babisz. “This year we are also receiving a grant from the Algonac Clay Community Fund Community Foundation of St. Clair County to cover the cost of the county stage in Algonac. The Clay Township Downtown Development Authority is providing the funds for the stage at the Clay Township location. Mark and Marliss Thompson are providing portable, handicap accessible facilities at the Algonac location.”

Every week there are also different band sponsors.

At Algonac Riverfront Park, Jessey Adams will take the stage on June 6, Brent Mireau and the Cheap Smokes will perform on June 13, Old Days, a Chicago tribute band, will perform on June 20, Bandwagon will perform on June 27, and the Meldrum Brothers Band will perform on July 11.

Infinity and Beyond, a Journey tribute band, will kick off events at Clay Township Park on July 18. Gypsy and the Rockers will perform on July 25, the Detroit Blues Band with Jimmy McCarty on August 1, The Fabulous Henhouse Boys on August 8 and After it All on August 15.

At the Algonac City Council meeting on March 5, Mayor Rocky Gillis said that food trucks will be available and parked along M-29 for the events in Algonac.

The venues for the Algonac and Clay Township events, in the event of rain, will be the Algonac Fire Hall for Algonac and the Algonac High School Lecture Hall for Clay Township. Decisions regarding venues will be made by 5:30 p.m. prior to each performance.

Music in the Parks – Island Style, Harsens Island's Music in the Parks series, will have four dates at Browne's Field this summer. BlueSkye will perform on June 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Under Pressure will perform on July 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Brent Mireau will perform on August 3 from 4-6 p.m., and the Uc3 Trio will perform on September 14 from 6-8 p.m.

There are different band sponsors each week. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the event will be held at the Harsens Island Fire Station. The venue decision will be made by 5:00 p.m. before each performance.

The first concert of the 2024 Ira Township Music in the Park series will take place on June 14th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. featuring The Same Old Guys. The series will have four dates at Ira Township Municipal Park.

“ML Chartier is also the title sponsor of Ira Township Music in the Parks for the second year,” said Babisz. “We recognize our sponsors through our flyers, promotions and on-stage announcements from our presenters and bands. Sponsors are welcome to attend each event and showcase their companies and organizations.”

Other performances include The Fabulous Henhouse Boys (July 19, 7pm-9pm), Dan Tillery Music (August 16, 7pm-9pm) and Classic Maniacs (August 30, 6:30pm-8:30pm). The June 14 and August 30 performances will feature Mayle's Hot Dogs A La Carte in the park.

There are different band sponsors each week. In the event of rain, the event will be held at the Ira Township Fire Hall. The venue decision will be made prior to the start of each performance.

Babisz said that depending on the venue, organizers expect between 50 and 300 spectators at each performance.

“In Clay Township and Ira Township, there are adults and children at the event and even more are in the park enjoying the play areas, splash pad, disc golf course and walking trails,” she said. “It's great to look around and see everyone enjoying our beautiful parks.”

She said that band planning and requesting sponsors usually begins in February of each year, but organizers are contacted by bands as early as October of the previous year.

“We get consistently positive feedback on these shows,” she said. “It's always a pleasure to announce the program. It's like the beginning of summer and happier times. I think it's a good resource for our communities.”

Babisz said she looks forward to seeing area residents, families, friends and visitors enjoying the music, parks and social gatherings.

“It’s very pleasant and fun to relax and enjoy nature,” she said.
