Score updates for Mississippi State vs. Virginia in NCAA regional baseball

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Mississippi State's baseball team is in the winners bracket of the Charlottesville Regional, where it faces host and No. 1 seed Virginia on Saturday.

No. 2 seed MSU (39-21) opened play Friday at Davenport Field with a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed St. John's. The Bulldogs scored two runs early on a two-run blast from Logan Kohler, but the Red Storm fought back and tied the game soon after.

The game went into overtime, but Dakota Jordan quickly put an end to the game. His three-run home run in the 10th inning gave the Bulldogs a walk-off victory.

Virginia (42-15) defeated No. 4 seed Penn on Friday by a final score of 4-2. The Cavaliers have a 27-7 record at home this season and have not lost in Charlottesville since May 12 against NC State.

Mississippi State is expected to start ambidextrous sophomore pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje on Saturday after Khal Stephen started on Friday.

Virginia began the second part of the ninth inning with a leadoff double to center field that was just a few feet away from a walk-off home run. The Hoos then managed a walk and moved a runner to third base on a fielder's decision.

With runners on the corners, Bobby Whalen brought the ball into play to bring home Harrison Didawick and end it with a walk.

Pitcher Matt Augustin, a freshman from Virginia, struck out two Bulldogs to start the ninth inning before allowing a walk to David Mershon, giving Dakota Jordan — who hit the walk-off home run in the 10th inning on Friday — his turn.

Jordan hit a single through the left side to put runners on the corners and keep the inning alive for Mississippi State, but Hunter Hines grounded out to second base to end the top of the ninth inning with the score tied 4-4.

Mississippi State managed a leadoff walk in the eighth inning and put runners on the corners with Logan Kohler's single. Kohler even stole second base to put two runners in scoring position, but Aaron Downs struck out and missed the game-winning runs.

Virginia got a runner on second base, but then Tyson Hardin struck out the next two batters, so the inning still ended with a 4-4 tie.

The Bulldogs got runners on base in the seventh inning but were unable to add to their lead, which came back to haunt them in the bottom of the inning when Virginia tied the game with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Bryce Chance was about to be intercepted at second base, but the throw missed and went to center field, and Chance made it to home plate to give Mississippi State a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning.

Mississippi State responds in the third inning with a three-run homer

It didn't take the Bulldogs long to respond to the two-run deficit. With two outs on the board, Mississippi State hit two straight singles. David Mershon and Dakota Jordan both got on base to set up a three-run home run to center field for Hunter Hines.

It was Hines' 54th career home run, putting him fourth all-time in program history. The home run gave Mississippi State a 3-2 lead early in the third inning.

Virginia 2, Mississippi State 0 after two innings

Mississippi State managed just two singles in the first two innings before Virginia broke through. The Hoos singled two bases before Eric Becker hit a triple to right-center field. Becker brought both runners home to give Virginia a two-run lead, but he was left stranded on third base.

Prediction for Mississippi State vs. Virginia

Mississippi State beats Virginia 4-3: Usually, the best pitchers are found on the first day of play. However, UVA has saved its star player for the second day, while Mississippi State has the luxury of having a strong second option. Between Cijntje and Blanco, I expect a low-scoring game. However, Jordan is in top form and could be the difference against a left-handed pitcher.
