Channels show Hardik Pandya's picture on the scoreboard during the West Indies' match against Papua New Guinea.

West Indies played their first T20 World Cup 2024 match against Papua New Guinea in Game 2 on June 2. As West Indies won the match by five wickets, fans were surprised when India's vice-captain Hardik Pandya came out of nowhere. The broadcasters showed Pandya's picture in the match summary section ahead of the players who had performed the best in the match.

Pandya's picture was shown before the names of Andre Russell and Brandon King. Thanks to a technical error by the broadcasters, he also made it into the Papua New Guinea team, replacing Sesa Bua and Asad Wala in the picture. As for the match, Papua New Guinea put 136 runs on the scoreboard by batting first on a slow track. West Indies struggled a little in between, but reached their target with five wickets in hand and one over remaining.

Here is a snapshot of the broadcasters’ technical glitch:

I think you have to stay in the fight: Pandya

Pandya has been through a difficult phase as an all-rounder. His performance in the Indian Premier League 2024 was disappointing. He took only 11 wickets and conceded runs at a rate of almost 11 runs per over. His performance with the bat was also not satisfactory as he managed only 216 runs at an average of 18. After scoring a quick 40* runs off 23 balls in the warm-up match of the T20 World Cup against Bangladesh, Pandy open to difficulties and challenges.

“I believe that ultimately you have to stay in the fight. Sometimes life puts you in difficult situations. But I believe if you leave the game or the field, the fight, you will not get what you want from your sport or get the results you are looking for. So, yes, it was difficult but at the same time, I was process-oriented. I tried to follow the same routines that I used to follow,” Pandya said.
