Welsh rugby squad announcement live: Gatland names players for summer tour

Warren Gatland will announce his squad for the summer games against South Africa and Australia today. The manager is expected to stick to his strategy of using young players, although older players such as Liam Williams and Cory Hill could return.

Cardiff defender Ben Thomas is also hoping for a call-up after impressive performances in recent weeks, while Ospreys backrow player Morgan Morris is keeping his fingers crossed that his time has come.

Josh Adams will likely miss the tour after an injury-plagued year, while Adam Beard is definitely out of the tour.

Wales will play South Africa at Twickenham on June 22 before travelling Down Under for two friendlies against the Wallabies and a clash with the Queensland Reds in July.

With the South Africa game being played outside World Rugby's international window, Gatland will be without several key players who play rugby for their club in England, including Six Nations captain Dafydd Jenkins.

Gatland is expected to announce his squad at around 2pm, followed by a press conference. You can follow all the latest news with our updates below.

How to deal with an injury crisis in the second row

A major problem for Warren Gatland is that the South African Test takes place outside World Rugby's scheduled international window, meaning the New Zealander cannot field players based in England or France.

Wales are in crisis ahead of their clash with the world champions. Six Nations captain Dafydd Jenkins is unavailable, as are Will Rowlands and Christ Tshiunza, who all play outside of Wales.

In addition, Adam Beard, Teddy Williams and Rhys Davies are all out through injury, while Seb Davies may face a suspension after being sent off for Cardiff against the Ospreys on Judgement Day. So could Gatland select an expanded squad before reducing it ahead of the Australian tour?

The many unavailabilities open the door for other players. Dragons player Ben Carter is likely to benefit, as are Ospreys forwards James Fender and Huw Sutton, who are yet to play an international match. There could also be a notable return for Cory Hill, who currently plays for Japanese fourth division side Secom Rugguts.

Warren Gatland will announce his Wales squad for the summer at 2pm today.

Wales face South Africa at Twickenham on June 22 before embarking on a tour of Australia that includes two Tests against the Wallabies in Sydney (July 6) and Melbourne (July 13) before a final non-international match against the Queensland Reds (July 19).
