Arizona golf coach Laura Ianello to Texas

Laura Ianello, who has served as Arizona women's golf coach for the past 14 seasons, is expected to be announced as the new head coach at Texas this week, according to multiple news reports Sunday.

Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman and Chip Brown of both reported Sunday that Ianello's hiring is expected to be announced early this week.

Ianello, who took over the UA program in 2010, was a two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and led the Wildcats to the 2018 NCAA Division I national championship in women's golf. She also played golf at the UA from 1999 to 2003, including being part of the Wildcats' 2000 national championship.

Ianello has coached 17 All-Americans in Arizona during the 14 years she has led the UA program.

Ianello and her program were the focus, alongside the UA men's team, less than six weeks ago at the opening of the UA's new William M. “Bill” Clements Golf Center, a $14.8 million facility for both teams on the grounds of the Tucson Country Club.

Since then, Ianello's Wildcats finished sixth in their NCAA regional appearance in Las Vegas, missing out on a place in the national championships by two strokes.

Ianello's new boss in Austin will be former UA athletic director Chris del Conte, UT vice president and Lois and Richard Folger athletic director. Del Conte was Arizona's senior assistant director of external operations and athletic programs from 2000 to 2006.

Ianello takes over a Longhorns program that is searching for a new coach following the resignation of Ryan Murphy last week. Murphy, who has been UT's women's golf coach for the past 10 years, led the Longhorns to five wins in the last six Big 12 championships; he was named the 2024 Big 12 Coach of the Year and led the Longhorns to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships before resigning last Friday.

Arizona announced in July 2023 that the UA and Ianello had agreed to a contract extension through 2028.
